The following comments were typed by Sujata Davis from written student comments. They have been slightly edited to protect the identity of the student. If any students recognize their remarks and wish to have them removed for any reason, please ask Sujata (not the instructor) to remove them.
The comments were given here so that students considering this course can have a better understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the course and the instructor as perceived by previous students.
Spring 2006
Overall assessment of the instructor:
- Very intelligent. I don't believe he comes to class prepared. But he can explain subjects well and he is very funny on top of that. He should be a comedian
- Excellent 100%
- Harvey is a very (sic) and one of the most humanistic person (sic) that I have ever seen in my life. He has got a great personality which makes the course even more interesting. He is knowledgable in his course but you have to ask him a lot of questions to catch up everythings that he talks about in class. He is a super cool and nice teacher. I love Harvey! P.S.: He is a humanistic comedian physicist. That's why he is an exceptional (sic).
- Very good at explaining material in simple or novel ways. Effective lectures.
- I had a lot of trouble getting accostomed (sic) to Java. At first I was trying to let the first chapter of his book teach me Java, but that wasn't working very well. Harvey then had me just copy the programs out of his book and do a few example questions. Though this did help me get through the course I still do not know much about Java. I feel that Harvey started out with standards that were way too high for me, he was able to adjust (or so I hope) and understand the hopelessness of me learning Java from his book. He did teach me Latex well.
- Professor Gould is enthusiastic and seems to enjoy teaching this class. Because I had no previous knowledge about the course materials, he has put extra eforts in helping me catch up with the rest of the class. He structures the course so each student is taught based on his/her own abilities and knowledge of the materials. Overall, he has been a very effective professor.
Overall assessment of the course:
- The course was so useful and organized.
- Individual structure is good, but don't assume students understand the right questions to ask themselves at first.
- I learned Latex which was valuble (sic) but I still know no Java to speak of.
- This course is fun and enjoyable on top of being very useful in helping me acquire new skills.

Overall assessment of the instructor:
- Enthusiastic, knowledgable.
- This class was not very well organized. there was no overall structure to the class and no real goals. It was difficult to learn without any direction and the class lectures were not helpful at all. The lack of flow between classes made it very ineffective at making any lasting impressions. The professor seems more concerned about the book than teaching and doesn't seem to have actually used very much of the programs in the book.
- Professor Gould is quite a nice instructor. he taught us a lot during this course. He knows a lot about computer simulation and gave us several interesting topics. He is very nice to help us in this course. He also makes quick response to my message. He grades the weekly summary and lab reports carefully.
- Has a great amount of knowledge on a wide range of topics. He's also very enthusiastic.
- He enjoys teaching and is very enthusiastic. He doesn't seem to prepare for class beforehand, and the classtime is often unrelated to what's happening in lab. Very useful outside of class, and very helpful whenever anyone has a question or problem. Always does his best to help people with their specific projects.
- Prof. H. Gould is a good, enthusiat (sic) teacher. I learnt a lot from his course.
- Harvey was born to teach this class. word. He's knowledgable in everything in the subject. He makes jokes and I like them. His website is dope, especially all the restaurants, but there's a lack of menus and that's weak.
- Lots of bad puns are good.
Overall assessment of the course:
- I like the project-oriented focus, and informal discussion-style classroom. De-emphasis of tests is positive. Class encourages collaboration naturally as opposed to forcing "group projects."
- Any structure at all would be a vast improvement. Some sort of grading to give the students an idea of their progress throughtout the semester would also be helpful.
- This course is quite useful, but need to be organized more structurally. the most valuable thing that I have learned from the course is about simulating mathematic model or physical model with computer. It's quite interesting to see the result of the program. Another useful tool that I learned is LATEX.
- The open structure of the course means there so many topics that can be covered that I feel I've learned small amounts about lots of things, but not seen anything in real depth. I found the lack of feedback and the time requirements a little stressful and I think that maybe fewer topics covered in more detail with tests might have been helpful.
- The assignments were very useful, and I learned a lot from them. Class time is very unrelated to lab time and could be used much more efficiently. It's hard to teach to both undergraduates and graduates, but it can be done effectively.
- The course covers a broad range of topic which I think is very helpful.
- I liked that this course was more hand on or lab based because I feel like it taught me much more that way. Very useful for the future.
- Lectures need to be more organized and planned ahead of time. Much of the time the lectures did not add to the understadning of course material. The course needs to be more structured and expectations need to be clearer.

Overall assessment of the instructor:
- He tried to make students think on a given problem and get the answer by themself.
- Professor Gould pays a lot attention to each student's project in class. That is what I appreciate. But in class, Prof. Gould does not teach a lot. He always just mention something, but not teach us as a system. And we spent much more time on the beginning, which is easy. But no time to discuss more complicated physics.
- Excellent. Harvey has such enthusiasm for this subject, which combined with his knowledge of this area makes this my most interesting class. I plan on continuing with Phys 327.
- Professor Gould has taught very little in class, he expects the student to learn everything their selves. He is a very poor teacher and is always unorganized and falling of topic during class. I have learned absolutely nothing from his class, all the programing I've done I either taught myself or have known previously. In my opinion this is a very poor way to teach and a waste of all our time.
- Dr. Gould is a good instructor. he certainly knows the material well. He does have room to improve on making his explanations during the lecture more clear.
- Material presentation did not always make sense but that could have been a result of insufficient background. Fine other than that.
Overall assessment of the course:
- I think that this course is helpful for undergraduate students. But for graduate students more advanced topics are needed.
- I like this course because it is useful in my future research and it is interesting
- Most of what I learned was from lab, not much from class or reading. Maybe other sources could be used for reading/classes?
- I believe there should be slightly more emphasis on the process of designing each computer simulation. It is easy to follow the written programs, but I find it difficult to create my own from scratch.
- The concept of the course is a good idea. If the class was more organized and structured then it might be more successful.
- I enjoyed the laboratory structure of this course. Writing up lab reports helped me to practice writing lab reports as well as learn the material. I found the handouts helpful in learning the material. The lectures on the other hand were not very helpful for me since all we did was go over the handouts. I learned nearly everything I learned in the course from the handouts. I think the lecture time would be better spent programming in the lab. I think the 12 hours a week that we are required to work on this course is unreasonable. If all 4 courses required 12 hours that is 48 and the upper limit should be 40 hours a week. I don't think the work logs should be used in grading since students could be dishonest about how much they worked.
- The course was rather confusing, as to what I was supposed to be doing, but open endedness was apparenly part of the point. Time spent working varied depending on the presence of lab reports, which were effective ways of learning about java and the math involved.

Overall assessment of the instructor:
- Harvey is an exceptional teacher, but he needs to work on his presentation of the material. Its very easy to get lost when he's talking.
- It would be great if we could have a complete text book. It's a great book written by Prof. Gould but it's not complete yet. It was not much of a problem but there was a little bit of difficulty in some programs.
- He tries to explain stuff but he is rarley (sic) clear. He needs to provide more feedback. The grading system seems scattered and a bit out of whack (??). He is enthusiastic about the subject matter and he is a real resource when it comes to knowing about xxx literature. He also has a lot of ideas for student projects which is quite good. He should explain more and not say, "you won't be able to understand." Why should a student take a course when that phrase is said every lecture?
- Professor Gould was a very good instructor, with his good preparation for class, excellent knowledge of the subject and availability outside class.
- Very good and very helpful.
- Very un (sic) in the air about what he expects. His comments on written work need improvement. He asks a lot of questions that no one knows or should know and then continues to explain them in terms which are difficult to understand.
- I found professor gould to be very animated. He likes simulations, in particular everything that he taught in the class.
- He is very enthusiastic. He is always willing to help and discuss about physics/computers. He chooses different way to teach which I like most. His class is based on discussions. He respects students' ideas a lot. He is very good.
- Harvey Gould is very enthusiastic about teaching simulations in physics. He guides you into looking at a broader picture of physical problems that might seem simple at first sight. I found his lectures very intuitive.
Overall assessment of the course:
- Great course. Really helped with my understanding of simulated phenomenon. The book needs a little work, but only superficially. Again work on presentation.
- The course should be more structured. You should give more feedback, perhaps a mid semester email about how the student is doing in the course would be helpful.
- Whole course was pretty well designed. I do not think that anything needs improvement.
- Very good
- Very unorganized. Dont know how he grades. Grading is subjective. Trying out his book was not fun. Wish I had better reference. The OSP package removed a lot of the creativity that goes into programing.
- I found the class to have the right amount of homework although I would have liked for a little more structure to the class. The class got me to learn many things which I would not have learned otherwise.
- The lab sessions are very good. Also instructor's book is very helpful. All materials (papers, articles, books, etc.) are provided by instructor / labs are very helpful. All assignments helped me to learn a lot.
- This course was all about challenging my understanding of physics. Problems that I always took for granted seemed a lot more complicated then I thought. In general, it was worth taking.

Overall assessment of the instructor:
- The instructor knows a lot of physical systems in many science fields. However, for a course that is open to all kinds of students, the problems aren't always explained as clearly as possible, and easy to understand for all students. Additionally, while the professor is overworked with all of his other duties he should make teaching a priority. often times, we have to wait for grades or chapters from the book because he is too busy.
- Excellent!
- Harvey spoon-feeds answers and concepts to students as seldom as possible. He encourages students to think for themselves and excel only if they put the effort in. This seems to me to be his general teaching style, which is sometimes difficult for students to deal with. Harvey demands a large time commitment for his course outside of class, and rightfully so. The intense amount of subject material covered requires routine studying. Outside of class, Harvey is always available and quite helpful, but again the students must make the effort.
- Harvey is very knowledgeable, enthusiastic professor. He is always friendly and helpful to the students. Apparently he knows a lot in the field. He always tries to stimulate the students to think about the problems themselves.
- Harvey is really a warm-hearted and devoted instructor. He is always ready to offer help.
Overall assessment of the course:
- The book needs a little more refinement as do the programs. I liked the other aspects of the course though. The lab reports, projects and general lab work effectively help students to understand the material presented in the chapters.
- The text book is wonderful (written by the professor).
- It's a difficult course which requires that you know/learn: Java, linux/osx, graphing programs, html, latex, and physics. Assignments are kind of sketchy because you "Go at your own pace" and for some, its rather slow. THis course is not clear in its demands sometimes, but the TA is helpful in bringing students back on track.
- It's very good course for me. I learned a lot of things from this course. I like it.
- I learned much in this course, such as java programming and much physics, but I think this course is really a big burden. It costs me too much time.

Overall assessment of the instructor:
- A great teacher with excellent attitude towards teaching and academics. He always leads us to think hard to reveal the essence from a complicated problem, which is very helpful to us. He also give me a useful help on understanding physics.
- He is a nice, interesting person who likes computers. He is in his office a lot, and is alway willing to help and to answer questions. He does however, expect a lot out of his students. I am required to do more work for this course than I am capable of doing with the time I have. But, though I am always stressed about the work I have to do, I feel somehow that he understands I can not possibly do it all. I wish he were more clear about the requirements for the course, and that he let students know how they are doing.
- Professor Gould is an excellent professor. However, due to the setup of the course, a student is required to learn a lot of things all at once. This overflow can cause a student that is new to the material to get confused and intimidated in the beginning.
- He is experienced instructor. I like the way he gives the class.
- More than simulation methods, I learned about Linux, Latex and more on operating systems. Harvey is very successful in imposing the importance of learning these.
- He is a little bit odd, but all right. He is pretty funny, talks about some interesting stuff in the class, but a little dull in a sense. He presented the questions to challenge the students, but lacks the encouragement we are seeking after, and there is not a point we know how we are doing in the class, etc. Overall, I hope there would be more communication between instructor and students.
- Prof. Gould is very passionate about the topics of this course. However, in wanting his students to share his passion, some vital teacher-student relations are over-looked. With no previous programming experience, this course served more as an introduction to Java than a physics survey. Any "new" physics was greatly out-weighed by programming/computer challenges. I feel this course along with an intro computer science course would be much more beneficial. Prof. Gould did, however, adequately highlight how computers are changing the way physics is practiced/applied.
Overall assessment of the course:
- This is a wonderful course which should be taken by every student. We gain not only computer knowledge but also physics truth from this course. Java is a very useful language.
- This course is very difficult. Especially for a first year student without any knowledge of computers. I have spent most of the semester frustrated and stressed at the work I have to do, and I don't feel like I have anywhere near the knowledge required for this course.
- I think that this is an excellent course. Students learn a lot of things while they take it. Students are also encouraged to learn more about the various topics covered in it.
- Pretty good.
- There could be a more well-defined grading scheme. I don't have a clue how I did for the lecture overall. Knowing it during the semester, could help to improve in the course.
- This course is very interesting, but the computer lab in the second floor is awful, not only there are a lot of people coming in and out, they chat and make a lot of noises all the time. The computers are unstable, something you left in there and you can't find it the next lab, it made you rather want to do the lab at the home, the lab is just terrible.

Overall assessment of the instructor:
- Professor Gould is an enthusiastic teacher with a vast knowledge of the subject. Often times I find the lectures not so detailed, so I often have to seek help outside of class. This course required a lot of working on the computer for long hours. Professor Gould has always been more than willing to help outside of class.
- Prof. Gould does a great job of presenting the material, though sometimes the topics are a little advanced. I would liked to have Prof. Gould explain prgm. a little more, but eventually I did catch on.
- Prof. Gould knows a lot about his subject. Sometimes his lectures are not too clear but he tries to make sure that everyone understands the material.
- He is an expert in this field. He always tries to keep student thinking. He tries to introduce as many aspects as possible. But he seldom says what I want to know.
- He's very enthusiastic about the subject, particularly since it seems his definition of "interesting" seems to be "has something to do with physics." He's also is a good writer (books and grant proposals), so there was much to learn from him there.
- He really seems to enjoy teaching and his lectures are never dry. Always full of examples from the non-science world (though he doesn't seem to regard social scientists very highly), he really knows how to make his point.
Overall assessment of this course:
- This course has really helped me gain knowledge on how to apply computers to physics. The lab reports in this course not only helped me in keeping up with the course work, but also helped me improve the quality and presentation of my lab reports.
- I think that the book should be changed. This class only puts forth one viewpt. Often if I did not understand the lecture the book did not help. Having class and lab times per week is a bit much. Consolidating into 2-3 mtgs would be better.
- I think that lab reports are really helpful. Actually I like the way this class is structured and usefulness of the reports. I enjoyed doing labs.
- This course gives me a new way of thinking. The course is not perfect but I have no idea how to make it better.
- This was a great course! It was the first time I took a "discussion" course that was actually a discussion. Some students would prefer to take notes from a lecture, but I feel I learned more with this format. It was nice just to carry on a conversation. I was able to learn some physics without taking the tedious intro courses. A good experience.
- We went over a lot of topics of general interest, in the context of physics. Though it is a physics class, Harvey realizes that all of us do not necessarily have the core background in that subject. He is especially good at using the final project to tune the student's interests in other topics and use the skills acquired in this class.

Overall assessment of the instructor:
- Professor Gould has the ability to simplify everything in such a way that you can understand it. I think he is an excellent professor.
- I think Prof. Gould is one of the most enthusiastic professors I have seen at Clark. It comes through very clearly that he loves his work. He is very warm and has a distinct sense of humor. If I knew anything about Physics, I would w/o hesitation call him a great professor. However, not knowing much about anything related to Physics at all, I find it difficult to follow his lectures at times. Yet, overall, I was glad to have met such a bright and lively instructor, totally dedicated to science and his students whom he seems to sincerely love and respect. Also it is admirable that he is aware of the capacity of each student in his class and does not expect everyone to be at the same level.
- Harvey Gould is an effective professor who does a great job of teaching material to students with varied backgrounds. His availability outside of class and his flexibility has been a great help to those of us whose backgrounds are comparatively weak. His organization of the course in terms of the schedule and impromptu quizzes to access our knowledge of the concepts was not well done.
- Prof Gould is useless. The class itself serves no purpose. He is of no help in any thing having to do with the class. He gives you the book and expects everyone to know exactly what is going on without any useful instruction. He is by far one of the worst professors I have ever had.
- Dr Gould wrote an excellent book. He has a lot of enthusiasm for helping students.
- Good, handwriting difficult to read.
- The instructor did a good job.
- Prof. Gould is friendly and an excellent prof. However, at times, his explanations are confusing.
- Excellent.
- Good critical thinker with a lot to teach. Allows students to pursue individual interests, which is very nice, but sometimes the class period itself became unstructured - students did not have questions to ask, and there was no specific lesson plan; the professor's breadth of knowledge allowed him to improvise reasonably well in such situations. The professor has an entire world of ideas in his head, and good ones, but sometimes this made it difficult for him to listen to students, and have patience in hearing what they are trying to say.
Overall assessment of course:
- The only thing I would suggest is the assignment of more reference material for the particular topics covered.
- This is a great course for those interested in using the computer to simulate physical phenomena. However, I had the misconception that it could be molded towards any major that had nothing to do with science, such as the Arts. Still, I enjoyed reviewing my high school Physics and learning a lot of new things and at the same time improving my computer simulation skills. I wish the course could be a little more structured with more guidance during the labs. Because I personally didn't know so much about Physics, being left to my own wasn't always productive.
- It will be more helpful to have a few quizzes during the semester and more readings outside of the text.
- The class is pointless. Nothing covered in the entire semester has anything to do with physics. The course description says "no computer programming is assumed." However it is vital to the class material. The lectures serve no purpose but to waste time. The class and its instructor should be dropped.
- The class needs better exposition of the topics before the assignments are given.
- The course is wonderful, especially the lab. The lecture was not so helpful sometimes.
- Good. The lecture should take a little more weight and should be more organized.
- Useful course.
- The course setting is different. The discussion is a good idea, but a certain amount of lecture is a good idea. It's too open-ended to some extent.
- Excellent. I suggest a more objective grading, based on what we know, not on what we have learned.
- A clearer line between learning programming language and procedures and learning to create, run, and analyze simulations would be useful; minimally, a little longer time spent on simply learning the language could be useful.

Overall assessment of the instructor:
- He's a nifty teacher to have, but at times somewhat perplexing in his explanations. The TA is very helpful and knowledgeable and at the same time less perplexing. Prof. Gould is an active instructor. His teaching shows unbridled enthusiasm for the subject matter. His instruction in class shows unprecedented love for the subject. He also shows genuine care for the students.
- Very good.
- He is smart and kind. His lecture didn't give us a lot of knowledge that we should know. He answered our questions carefully and effectively, but why did we always had have lots of questions? Maybe he should summarize the essence and give us a clear point to the topics.
- Although he knows his subject matter exceptionally well and is an experienced instructor, a bit more planning and organization would improve the quality of the course and make the course more effective for the wide spectrum of students.
- He is a good teacher.
- Prof. Gould has helped me think of physics in new ways. His teaching style is informal and facilitates discussion about the subject matter.
- Harvey is a brilliant professor and sometimes expects his students to be the same. He is quite helpful once approached but intimidating to approach. He is enthusiastic about students work only if he wants to be. What I am trying to say is that Harvey can be a good instructor if he wants to. I like the textbook though.
- Harvey's course by itself is quite interesting, however Harvey himself is not really involved with the student learning about simulation. In fact, I think I learned more from the T.A. (Greg) than I did from Harvey. This course requires the teacher to spend a fair amount of time with students explaining the new concepts, etc. - and I think Harvey does not have that sort of spare time to be an effective teacher.
- Dr. Gould's relation to the book is such that he cannot see the flaws. He could only see flaws in my lab reports. It is the opinion of your humble narrator that although he cares about the students, he is unable to convey that in any meaningful or convincing way.
Overall assessment of the course:
- The structure with the work is a good outline, the scheduling outside work time for the lab with a professor or TA present is difficult.
- An absolutely fascinating subject; I have learned many useful skills from this course, and I believe that these skills will help a lot in my course of pursuing my goal.
- This course is very helpful because not only do we learn the physics theories again, but also we learn how to resolve physics problems by computer simulation.
- The range of physics problem tackled was quite large - however the language should be at least upgraded from True Basic to be more effective for research purposes.
- I think its a good course especially the physical concepts covered.
- The laboratory reports are a valuable/effective way of assessing knowledge of the simulations. I am very happy with the course; programming has taught me to think critically in a different way.
- This course has serious potential which has not been dug into fully. So much can happen in this course. It is useful for any field of study.
- The subjects covered in the course were interesting, however it was too time consuming especially because nothing was specified. Harvey also needs to help the students learn more computer language.
- The course flies past at a furious rate. I have no deep understanding of anything I do which makes me uncomfortable but is, none the less, probably good for me. I learn more than I know that I learn.
