Due 4 September
- Send me your schedule (before class) if you haven't already done so.
- Read Chapter 1 like a novel and then reread thru page 18 if possible.
- Download the Launcher and make sure that it works on your computer.
- Problems 1.1 or 1.2 (see me if you don't have a computer) and Problems 1.15, 1.21, and 1.24. A few sentences for each problem is sufficient.
Due 9 September
Homework will generally be due on Tuesdays, after the problem session on Thursday.
- Problems 1.5, 1.6, and 1.7.
Due 11 September
- Problem 1.8. Do as many parts as you understand. It is not necessary to Switch GUI.
- Problem 1.16.
- Start reading Chapter 2. We might get as far as Sec. 2.7 on Thursday evening.
- Remember that the class will now meet in Room 217 and that we will also meet from 6-7:30 pm on Thursday evening.
The problem session on Thursday, Sept. 11 will be mostly be a make-up class rather than a problem session. There will be no class on Tuesday, Sept. 30, and Thursday, Oct. 9.

- Examination on Tuesday, October 7. The test will be on the material covered on Chapters 1 and 2, but will not include material discussed in Sections 2.22-2.25, which we will discuss later in the course.
Due 9 October
- No class, Thursday, October 9.
Due 14 October
- Problems 3.10, 3.13, 3.15, 3.17, 3.18, 3.20, 3.27, 3.29, 3.54, 3.56, 3.57, 3.58.
- Extra credit: Problems involving Bayes' theorem, 3.63, 3.65.
- Read Chapter 3 with the exception of the starred sections (which you might find interesting).
Due 21 October
- Problems 3.32, 3.35, 3.38, 3.39, 3.40, 3.41, 3.59, 3.68, 3.70, 3.72.
Due 28 October
- Problems 3.33, 3.37, 3.42, 4.2, 4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 4.8, 4.38, 4.39.
- Download the latest version of the Launcher.
- Start reading Chapter 4. Because the examples at the beginning illustrate the general considerations that are discussed later in the chapter, it would be a good idea to read as much of the chapter as possible.
- Send me an email with your weekly summary by Tuesday morning of each week. Tell me the important concepts that you learned and how you learned them. Also tell me how you spent your time on the course during the past week.
- There are plenty of problems in Chapter 3 and 4 for extra credit.

- 4.15, 4.16, 4.20, 4.22, 4.25, 4.43, 4.45.
- Don't forget the weekly summary.
Due 11 November
- Problems 4.29, 4.30, 4.31, 4.33, 4.34, 4.48, 4.49, 4.50, 4.53. (The applets for the assigned simulations are in the Launcher under An Ideal Thermometer.
- Extra credit: 4.23 and any stared problems.

- Second hourly examination on Chapters 3, 4, and Chapter 5 thru Sec. 5.1.
- Problems 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, and 5.4.

Due 20 November
- Read Sections 5.3-5.6, but skip Sec. 5.4.4 if you wish.
- Do any problems for Exam 2 that you missed.
Due 25 November
- Problems 5.5, 5.6, 5.8, 5.11, 5.15, 5.35, and 5.44. I am not sure how long these problems will take to complete. Don't spend more time on this assignment than you (should) do on the usual weekly problem sets.
Due 2 December
- A one paragraph summary of the subject of your paper. See topics for some (non-inclusive) suggestions.
- Read Sections 6.1 thru 6.4.
Due 11 December
- Problems 6.3, 6.4, 6.7, 6.8, 6.9, 6.12, 6.13, 6.50, 6.51.
- Solution for Problem 6.15.
- Weekly summary.
18 December
- Final Exam, Thursday, 11 am - 2 pm.
- Any students wishing to take an optional oral examination (in additional to the written final) should see me. Taking such an examination will not lower your grade. The oral exam should be scheduled after the final.
