Physics 150, Statistical and Thermal Physics

Arshad Kudrolli is a physicist and an experimentalist with an active research interest in granular matter, fluid dynamics, and applied mechanics. The systems he studies are typically nonlinear, driven, and far from equilibrium. Such systems display complex behavior and self-organization which often result from a few simple physical interactions between constituents. He has established the Complex Matter and Nonlinear Physics Laboratory and collaborates with researchers using experiments, simulations and theory to develop a deep understanding of such systems.

A major focus of his group's current research is on the interaction of granular matter and liquids leading to transport. This is important in many geophysical processes and energy industry related technologies including in the dynamics of sand dunes, erosion and deposition of sediments in rivers and channels, turbidity currents, slurry transport, and proppant deposition in hydraulic fracturing. His group is currently designing experiments which enable measurement of the local fluid and granular flow fields to develop a deeper understanding of particle laden flows. Techniques include fluorescent optical index matching, PIV, and micro X-ray computed tomography to study the microscopic response in addition to the macroscopic variables in the system. Other topics of interest include packing of granular spheres, rods and filaments, self-organization in active matter, and locomotion in Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids.

Recent research presentations at the Kavli Institute of Theoretical Physics on granular erosion and on active matter can be found online.Arshad Kudrolli has been named an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow by the Sloan Foundation, and is a recipient of a Research Innovation Award from Research Corporation and a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation. He was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2010. His research is currently funded by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, and the Petroleum Research Fund.

His background includes a post-doc in nonlinear physics and pattern formation with Jerry P. Gollub at Haverford College, and thesis work in Quantum Chaos using microwave techniques with S. Sridhar at Northeastern University.
